May means graduation time: Undergraduate and graduate school grads are entering the workforce as accountants, teachers, and millennial generational experts…what?

May means graduation time: Undergraduate and graduate school grads are entering the workforce as accountants, teachers, and millennial generational experts…what? A monster.com senior editor said that there are not only new needs that need to be met but also new ways of meeting existing needs. Therefore, new grads and veteran workers looking to reinvent themselves are pursuing careers that did not exist 10 years ago.

Technology
Not surprisingly, advances in technology have created demand for careers like App Developers and Cloud Computing Service Providers. Telework Managers and Virtual Business Service Providers are also needed to manage the increasing number of organizations with virtual employees who rely on video conferencing and wikis to stay connected in real-time.

Market Research
The Internet, algorithmic tracking tools, and social media content give marketers a goldmine of customer information beyond what could previously be compiled via surveys, focus groups, or other traditional forms of market research. But, this information can be overwhelming and worthless without making sense of it all. Social Media Managers, Market Research Data Miners, and Chief Listening Officers are information junkies who turn customer data into useful information.

Generational Communication and Assistance
Twenty-two year olds, glued to their cell phones and Facebook are much different than seasoned 40-50+ year olds. Millennial Generational Experts narrow the gap between generations working under one roof and help companies better motivate and communicate with different generations. Elder-Care Services Coordinators, Patient Advocates, and Senior-Move Management Services are new careers spawned from advocates for proper elderly care and the fact that people are living longer.

Sustainability
Go green, recycle, reuse, and sustainable energy are buzz words that have been spoken so loudly jobs like Sustainability Experts and Sustainability Managers are becoming more mainstream. Newer forms of environmentally safe practices are being led by people who demand Green Funeral Directors so the remains of loved ones are put to rest in the most environmentally friendly ways. Lastly, Interior Designers are so last season. Check out Interior Redesigners who leverage existing furniture instead of spending money on new furniture and creating waste from old furniture.

I do about 80% of my shopping at a local Farmer’s Market, which is cash only. In this modern age of digital communication and tech gadgets it sometimes seems archaic to pay for food and merchandise with paper. These local farmers and merchants say they achieve savings by operating as cash-only businesses by avoiding transaction, bank, and maintenance fees. But, do they miss out on business from shoppers who seldom carry cash or who get tapped out halfway through the market with no ATM in sight?

Step in the billing credit card terminal iPhone app.

Last week at the Farmer’s Market I was pleasantly surprised when a talented jewelry designer whipped out her iPhone and said, “Sure, I take plastic.” She punched in my credit card number and asked me to sign her iPhone with my fingertip. Mere milliseconds later my own phone buzzed with an incoming confirmation email with all the transaction information. Incredible. Secure. Fast.

The jewelry designer would have missed out on my $50 of business if not for this billing app. By the time I got down to her stand I spent all of my greens on fruits and veggies. I am just one of thousands of Farmer’s Market goers. I bet there are hundreds of fellow shoppers who run into the same situation – no cash, time to head to the car. So, while this new merchant account tool may burn a hole more quickly in wallets, it opens up a new market and more potential sales for small merchants and businesses. Very cool.
